First post-revolution local polls set for December 17

“The municipal elections will take place on December 17 2017,” president of the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) Chafik Sarsar told media on Monday.

“The armed forces will go to the polls on December 10, 2017. The municipal results will be proclaimed from December 17 to 20 of the same month and the final results will be announced by January 24, 2018, he said.

The special delegations will be dissolved by April 19,” he specified.

According to Chafik Sarsar, the voters’ registration will continue from June 19, 2017 to August 10, 2017.

Submitting nominations will start on September 19, 2017 and will close on the 26th of the same month, he added.

As for the electoral campaign, it will continue from November 25 to December 15, 2017, he went on saying.

According to Sarsar, voters will be convened by presidential decree no later than September 18, 2017 and the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) will have to examine and adopt the local communities’ Code by the end of August 2017.

For this, the ISIE president considered it essential to meet all the conditions to help organise this electoral event as soon as possible.

According to Sarsar, these include the promulgation of the Local Communities’ Code, the establishment of the regional chambers of the Administrative Court, the dissolution of special delegations, the end of the electoral division process, the promulgation of the decree setting the ceiling for election expenses and the establishment of databases.

The municipal polls due on December 17 are the country’s first since its 2011 revolution.  After legislative and presidential elections in 2014, following the adoption of a new Constitution, the local polls aim to complete the process of democratization after the Revolution.

The date of December 17 was agreed in consultations with the government, political parties and the civil society,  ISIE president Chafik Sarsar said.
