Kuwait leads Arab region in food security; Bahrain ranked 6th

Kuwait ranked first in Arab countries and 26th in the world on Economist Intelligence of Food Security for 2017.

The 2017 Global Food Security Index provides a worldwide perspective on which countries are most and least vulnerable to food insecurity and how resource risks increase vulnerability.

The global indicator, annually published by the Economist magazine, ranked Bahrain 6th in the Arab region and 37th in the world.

Sultanate of Oman is ranked 2nd, followed by Qatar(3rd), Saudi(4th) and the United Arab Emirates(5th).

The top ten Arab countries also included Tunisia, Jordan, Egypt and Morocco, which ranked 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th.

They are followed by Algeria, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

Ireland topped the world list on the global index of food security, dethroning the United States of America which dropped from the first position in 2016 to second this year.

The Global Food Security Index (GFSI) considers the core issues of affordability, availability and quality and safety across a set of 113 countries.

The index is made up of twenty-eight indicators that measure the drivers of food security across both developing and developed countries.

The GFSI has included this year a new category that assesses “countries’ exposure to the impacts of a changing climate; their susceptibility to natural resource risks; and how countries are adapting to these risks”.
