US Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan paid a visit on Friday in Tunis, for official talks, as part of a regional tour.
After a meeting with Tunisian Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, Sullivanttplf reporters that the U.S. will continue its support to Tunisia in economic and security fields.
“The US has increased its military aid to Tunisia by 30 percent to $205 million dollars, compared to 2016,” he said.
Washington will support investments of American businessmen in Tunisia, Sullivan underlined in reference to the economic reform applied by the Tunisian government.
As regards he Libya issue, Sullivan said that the Libyan Political Agreement signed in Morocco in 2015 was the only way to resolve the Libyan crisis. He asserted that any military intervention would lead to more chaos and violence.
Signed in the Moroccan city of Skhirat, the agreement gave rise to Libya’s current UN-backed unity government.
One year after its signing, however, Libya’s Tobruk-based government neglected the agreement, demanding that the dealst mu be reformulated.
Late September, talks started in Tunisia between the North African country’s main political camps with a view to amending the terms of the 2015 agreement.
Sullivan also stated that during a meeting with Fayez al-Sarraj, Chairman of the Presidential Council of Libya and prime minister, they will discuss the steps to be taken to ensure a peaceful transition in Libya.
Sullivan also met Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi and Tunisian Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui.
