Speaker of the House of Representatives of Morocco Habib El Malki commended the progress made by Tunisia on the path of democratic construction and enshrining freedoms, stressing the urgent need to make the best use of the opportunities for cooperation and partnership available in the two countries to lay the foundations for effective cooperation in all areas.
During his meeting with President Beji Caid Essebsi emphasis was placed on ways to boost inter-Maghreb action and promote complementarity and integration between the Maghreb states.
El Maliki, who is paying an official visit to Tunisia on February 28-March 4 at the invitation of Speaker Mohamed Ennaceur, said the meeting with Prime Minister Youssef Chahed reaffirmed the solidity of Tunisian-Moroccan relations.
He also hailed Tunisia’s historic role in building the Maghreb edifice and its constructive contribution to tackling regional challenges.
Besides, the meeting was an opportunity to discuss ways to strengthen economic, trade, tourism and financial cooperation, the Prime Ministry said in a press release.
Additionally, during his meeting with Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui Speaker of the House of Representatives of Morocco, Habib El-Melki said that “the lack of dialogue and the problems related to the Moroccan national issue, in particular, the unity of its territory”, constitute the main obstacles hindering the achievement of the building of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU).
“Morocco has submitted to the UN several proposals that receive increased support from countries,” he said, hoping that “the reason will prevail and that we are artisans of a prosperous Maghreb future “.
“This Maghreb building should serve as an economic group with decision-making power and initiative in its relations with its partners in Europe and other economic groupings,” he pointed out during his meeting with his Tunisian counterpart, Mohamed Ennaceur.
He emphasised the importance of coordinating positions and views between Tunisia and Morocco to serve the interests of both countries.
