The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the L’Oréal Foundation have announced on Friday that they are preparing to honour several international female scientists in their 2018 For Women In Science and International Rising Talents awards programs.
Fifteen female scientists, including three from Jordan, UAE and Tunisia, will be recognized in the International Rising Talents program, where as five will be selected for the For Women in Science program.
Others to be awarded in the Rising Talents program hail from Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and North America. The ceremony will be held on March 22nd in Paris.
The five winners who have been selected from South Africa, China, United Kingdom, Canada and Argentina will receive a prize of €100,000, and will be honoured for their contributions in the fields of “medicine, palaeontology, molecular biology, ecology and developmental biology,” the statement by the awards said.
This year’s For Women In Science awards marks the event’s 20th anniversary.
Both foundations have honoured five female scientists each year with the award, with the view that “there are many eminent women scientists, and raising their profile is vital to promoting greater gender equality in science.”
Only 28% of the world’s scientists are women, while only 3% of Nobel Prize recipients in science have been women, according to the For Women In Science awards.
