EU-Tunisia partnership strengthening in focus at EU High Representative meeting with Tunisian PM

The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy / Vice-President of the Commission Federica Mogherini met yesterday with Tunisian Head of Government Youssef Chahed in Brussels. They discussed the strong relations between the European Union and Tunisia and the current situation of the country.

The EU-Tunisia relations are based on a solid cooperation and several achievements. Mrs Mogherini and Mr Chahed both expressed their shared will to deepen this cooperation, with even more tangible results for the Tunisian citizens.

Since the revolution of 2011, the EU has been supporting the democratic transition in Tunisia. In line with the 2016 Communication “Strengthening EU support for Tunisia”, the EU financial cooperation increased up to 300 million euros in 2017. The EU-Tunisia association council due to take place on 15 May in Brussels will be the opportunity to announce new decisions to reinforce the partnership and the cooperation between both parties.

The High Representative stressed the importance of the forthcoming local elections on 6 May, which represents a new crucial step in the reinforcement of the democratic process of the country. The European Union has deployed an Electoral Observation Mission, which shows the continuous commitment of the EU and its member states in Tunisia for the consolidation of its democracy.

Mrs Mogherini and Mr Chahed have also addressed regional issues of common interest, and notably the joint will to reach a global and inclusive political solution to the Libyan crisis.
