Proclamation of January 23 of each year National Slavery and Human Trafficking Abolition Day In Tunisia

President Beji Caid Essebsi proclaimed January 23 of each year as a National Slavery and Human Trafficking Abolition Day, President of the Tunisian national authority against trafficking in human beings (French: INLCTP) Rawdha Laabidi told TAP on Tuesday.

The decision is a reaction to the request addressed by the
INLCTP authority to the Presidency of the Republic for the proclamation of January 23, 1846 (date of abolition of slavery in Tunisia), as a National Day. Tunisia was the first Arab country to abolish slavery.

The decision will enhance the human rights system on the celebration of the 173rd anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Tunisia, a Presidency statement reads.
