Training session for teachers on reducing food waste organized (FAO)

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is organising a training session on 28 February 2019 for 60 school and high school teachers on good practices to reduce food waste (bread and dairy products), the UN agency reports in a statement issued on Friday.

The FAO exerts efforts in the Middle East and North Africa region for Reducing Food Waste and Waste and Developing Value Chains for Food Security in Egypt and Tunisia.

This initiative is funded by the Italian International Development Agency and implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries and the National Institute of Consumption (INC), the same source said.

The training session is aimed to provide teachers with the necessary tools to raise awareness among schoolchildren about the importance of changing their behaviour towards food waste, especially bread and dairy products.

Teachers will have the opportunity to discuss with FAO’s awareness and communication experts the content of the awareness guide on food waste that has been developed as part of this project for the MENA region and to provide their own ideas to facilitate the discussion with 2,40 school and high school students in Tunisia.

At the end of this training, a national drawing competition on food waste will be launched in collaboration between FAO, INC, the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, and the Ministry of Education.

These activities are part of the implementation of the project launched in 2016 by FAO following studies that estimated waste and losses in the milk and cereal sectors and identified their causes, highlighting strategic priorities in Tunisia.
