Measures for Tunisian Olive Oil Exports to Europe

New measures in Tunisia dictate that the country’s olive oil producers must obtain specific authorization to participate in the country’s duty-free export quota program with the European Union.

The presidential decree applies to all Tunisian companies already registered on the official list of olive oil exporters, TAP reports.

Interested exporters will have to receive authorization from the Ministry of Agriculture at least one week before the actual shipment.

Currently, the cooperation agreement signed by the European Union with Tunisia allows the export of up to 56,700 tons of olive oil annually duty-free to EU member states.

The duty-free trade agreement is very important for Tunisian olive oil producers. In recent years, local authorities have asked the European Union to extend the quota of 57,600 tons to at least 100,000 tons.

These figures represent an increase of 32% over the same period last year, with 18% of this increase coming from exports.

The Tunisian National Observatory of Agriculture (Onagri) added that a 40% increase in average export prices of olive oil was one of the reasons for this increase in exports.
