Tunisia to resume flights to Libya “very soon”

Tunisia will resume flights to neighbouring Libya “very soon”,  Foreign Minister Khemais Jhinaoui said Monday, during a meeting with Libya’s UN-backed Prime Minister Fayez Serraj in the Libyan capital Tripoli.

The two officials discussed means to facilitate bilateral trade between their countries and joint border management, according to a statement of the foreign Ministry.

“The Tunisian minister reiterated his country’s support for the Government of National Accord, stressing Tunisia’s will to restore economic relations and activate the legal frameworks for trade transactions between the two countries,” the statement reads.

“Jhinaoui stressed that the Tunisian Airline will very soon resume operation in Libya,” the statement added.

Most foreign airlines, including Tunisian Airline, suspended flights to Libya due to the deteriorated security situation in the country since 2014.

A technical team of the Tunisian Civil Aviation Authority has been carrying out intensive visits to Libya since the beginning of this year to review the technical and security conditions of the Libyan airports, in preparation for resuming flights.

The visit of Jhinaoui to Libya provided “an opportunity to enhance the strategic nature of the relations between the two brotherly countries and discuss means of activating the Presidential initiative and the outcome of the tripartite ministerial meeting held in Algiers on May 21, 2018 and the outcome of the May 29, 2018 meeting in Paris aimed at assisting all Libyan parties Libyan in dialogue and negotiation to reach a comprehensive political solution to the crisis in this brotherly country,” the statement added.
