Agri-food SIAMAP exhibition kicks off in Tunis

A record number of exhibitors (500) and visitors (200,000) are expected at the 13th edition of the SIAMAP 2017 International Show of Agriculture, Agricultural Machinery & Fishing from October 31 to November 5 in the Tunis’s Kram exhibition space. The announcement was made by the head of the Tunisian Agriculture and Fisheries Union (UTAP), Abdelmajid Zar, who noted that this year the exhibition will present a chock-full program centering on sharing research and experiment results. Country guest of honor will be Turkey. SIAMAP serves as a showcase for Tunisian agriculture, called upon to deal with challenges for productivity and income and to promote the labor of women in agriculture.

Women accunt for about 65% of the workforce in Tunisian agriculture. The event will also be a chance to present a new law on investment, which provides for different incentives to benefit the agricultural sector, Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries Minister Samir Taieb said. Some 36 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas have said they will be taking part in the event, including a large Italian delegation. An important part of SIAMAP 2017 will be on digital agriculture and a competition will be held to improve IT applications in the agriculture and fisheries sector entitled “Smart Agriculture Hackathon”. A forum will also be held in collaboration with the UN’s FAO on ‘The African Women Farmer: Autonomous Players in the Economy’.
