Energy: Tunisian premier announces cooperation with Libya

Tunisia wants the priority on oil provisions from Libya, Tunisian Premier Youssef Chahed said during the first Tunisian-Libyan forum organized by the Tunisia Africa Business Council, attended by ministers, officials and hundreds of entrepreneurs from the two countries, which wrapped up today.

In particular, Chahed said the two countries will start a strategic cooperation on energy, which will enable to exchange surplus, based on the mechanism ‘Oil for Food’, or goods in exchange for oil.

To boost exchanges, Tunisia and Libya will strengthen efforts to develop trade inside the country, accelerating railway, highway and electric connections and creating a free trade zone like Ben Guerdane, the last Tunisian city before the border with Libya.

Chahed also relaunched the idea of new maritime and air connections. The premier expressed Tunisia’s support for legitimate Libyan institutions and for UN efforts to preserve a truce among rival militias in Tripoli.
