UNHCR Tunisia inaugurates new headquarters: new prospects for refugees and asylum seekers

The inaugural ceremony of the new headquarters of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), took place last Wednesday in Tunis with the attendance of UN representatives, ambassadors of several brotherly and friendly countries and high ranking officials.

In her welcome address, UNHCR Representative Hanan Hamdan said that Tunisia is the first country to have ratified the international convention on refugees.

She then mentioned the main stages of the establishment of the UNHCR in Tunisia, stressing the importance of making even greater efforts to fight against smuggling and trafficking in human beings.

In turn, Minister of Foreign Affairs Othmen Jerandi said that this new headquarters will open new perspectives for refugees and asylum seekers, underlining the fact that providing care for people sent back into exile is a worldwide effort.

Jernadi also stressed the need to address this issue and to favour a humane and humanitarian approach.

For his part, United Nations Resident Representative, Arnaud Peral, commended Tunisia’s position in its policy of hosting migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, while several countries have turned their backs on them “We are at your side, to help the Tunisian people and people in displacement situations. “He added.
