Tunisia’s grain harvest expected to rise 30-40% says UTAP

Tunisia’s grain harvest is expected to increase by 30-40% this year compared to one year ago, Mohamed Rjaibia, a senior official of the farmers’ union, told reporters on Tuesday.

The agriculture ministry said the harvest would be “good”, without giving figures. Last year’s harvest was about 1.6 million tonnes.

Agriculture Minister Mhamoud Elyess Hamza said last month that Tunisia was aiming to achieve self-sufficiency in durum wheat production this year.

“This year’s harvest will be really good and we expect an increase (of) 30-40%,” Rjaibia said.

The expected growth in production will allow Tunisia to reduce its grain imports. The country, which over the past decade has had an average grain harvest of about 1.5 million tonnes, consumes about 3.4 million tonnes of wheat per year.
