EU releases €150 million in financial support for Tunisia

– This grant is intended to support “Tunisia in stabilising its macroeconomic situation and in its efforts to improve the management of public finances and the business climate”.

The European Commission has announced that the European Union (EU) has disbursed €150 million in financial support to Tunisia.

This is what emerges from a press release published by the European Commission, explaining that “the disbursement of this financial support in the form of a grant forms part of the programme of support for Tunisia’s macro-economic reforms (PARME), agreed by the EU and Tunisia in December 2023”.

According to the press release, the disbursements of these grants, which will be made based on actual progress, are intended to support “Tunisia in stabilising its macroeconomic situation and in its efforts to improve the management of public finances and the business climate, as well as to strengthen the State’s capacity to ensure stable and inclusive growth”.

This support is also “part of the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on a strategic and comprehensive partnership, signed by the two parties on 16 July 2023 in Tunis, and contributes, among other things, to strengthening macro-economic stability”.

“It testifies to the commitment of the EU and Tunisia to work together to achieve and implement the various areas of work agreed in the Memorandum of Understanding and its 5 pillars: Macroeconomic Stability, Economy and Trade, Green Energy Transition, Bringing People Together, Migration and Mobility”, reads the same source.

For her part, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, pointed out that “the EU stands by Tunisia and is disbursing 150 million euros in support of economic reforms and financial stability”.

TAP quoted the President of the European Commission as saying: “This is an important step in the framework of our agreement concluded last year and a fine advance in our partnership”.

On 16 July this year, Tunisia and the European Union signed a memorandum of understanding on a “comprehensive strategic partnership” between the two parties in several areas, including the promotion of trade and the fight against irregular migration, worth over 750 million euros.

On 22 September, the European Commission announced that it would begin disbursing “in the next few days” the funds provided for under the agreement concluded in July with Tunisia to reduce the number of migrants arriving from the Tunisian coast, as reported by the foreign press.

According to European Commission spokeswoman Ana Pisonero, the Commission has announced budgetary aid of €60 million for Tunisia and an operational assistance package on migration of around €67 million, which will be disbursed in the next few days.
